## Summary
Neural extractive summarizers work well on short news articles (about 650 words) but struggle with long, multi-topic texts such as scientific papers. Xiao and Carenini propose a single-document extractive model that scores each sentence using three signals: the sentence itself, a representation of the whole document (global context), and a representation of the section or topic containing it (local context). Sentences are encoded by averaging word embeddings, and the model labels them without auto-regression. Section-level spans are represented with LSTM-minus, which takes differences of hidden states. This is its first use in summarization, and it needs far fewer parameters than hierarchical encoders. The authors built greedy oracle extractive labels for the Pubmed and arXiv corpora. The model beats earlier extractive and abstractive systems on ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and METEOR. The overall margin is small, but the advantage grows as documents get longer. An ablation shows, unexpectedly, that the improvement comes entirely from the local context. This suggests that topic-segment structure is the key ingredient for summarizing long documents.

## Key points
- The datasets are from Cohan et al. (2018). Pubmed has 133K documents averaging 3016 words, and arXiv has 215K documents averaging 4938 words. News corpora such as CNN, Daily Mail and NY Times average roughly 530–693 words.
- The architecture combines an Average Word Embedding sentence encoder, LSTM-minus span embeddings for sections, and a global document representation. Its design follows Kedzie et al. (2018).
- Gains over the previous state-of-the-art extractive model are clearest for documents of 3000 words or more. The Lead baseline does poorly, which points to weak position bias in scientific papers.
- In the Pubmed ablation, adding local context lifts ROUGE-1 from 44.29 to 44.85. On arXiv documents longer than 9000 words, it adds +1.06 ROUGE-1 and +1.1 ROUGE-2. Adding global context never produces a significant improvement (approximate randomization, Bonferroni, p \< 0.01).
- The oracle-labelled datasets and the code are released at github.com/Wendy-Xiao/Extsumm_local_global_context.
