## Summary
Plain Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting often leads large language models into invalid deductions on logic problems, because free-form natural-language rationales lack the rigor of formal inference. Earlier neuro-symbolic systems such as Logic-LM and LINC use the LLM only to turn text into logic and leave the inference to an external solver. That setup breaks on formatting mistakes, can lose information, and produces hard-to-read outputs. The authors propose SymbCoT, in which one LLM handles the whole pipeline with no external tools. A Translator turns premises into symbolic form. A Planner splits the question into sub-steps. A Solver applies explicit inference rules while keeping natural-language context. A Verifier re-checks the translation and each step against the original premises. The method was tested on five standard logical reasoning benchmarks with First-Order Logic and Constraint Optimization representations, using GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. SymbCoT consistently beats vanilla CoT and sets new state-of-the-art results, with bigger gains on harder problems. The work shows that LLMs can reason symbolically in a faithful, robust and explainable way without external provers.

## Key points
- SymbCoT has four LLM-based modules (Translator, Planner, Solver, Verifier) and uses a plan-then-solve design with retrospective verification. It mixes symbolic and natural-language expressions.
- The evaluation covers 5 datasets, two symbolic formalisms (FOL and CO) and two backbones (GPT-3.5, GPT-4). The method outperforms CoT and solver-based SoTA systems, and its advantage grows with task complexity.
- Case studies illustrate two failure modes:
  - Vanilla CoT commits "affirming the consequent" on the Descampe / 1992 du Maurier Classic question.
  - Prover9 answers "Uncertain" on the Harry/Walden example because a predicate was lost in translation, while SymbCoT correctly derives True.
- The authors list three limitations:
  - Only two symbolic languages were tested.
  - Longer reasoning chains increase token usage and API cost.
  - Effectiveness depends on the backbone LLM's own planning ability.
- The paper appeared at ACL 2024 (Long Papers). Code is available at github.com/Aiden0526/SymbCoT.
