## Summary

The paper targets two weaknesses of speculative decoding (SD) for LLMs. Classic "draft-then-verify" pipelines run strictly in sequence, which caps the speedup. Fully parallel schemes such as PEARL keep the large target model busy almost constantly, which raises the cost of using it. SPIDE is a training-free framework that switches between two modes as decoding goes on: serial dynamic drafting and parallel draft verification.

The core component is a confidence-acceptance mapping table. Draft-model confidence (the maximum next-token probability) is split into ten intervals, and the table records how often tokens in each interval were actually accepted. While drafting, these estimated acceptance rates are combined into a reliability score for the current draft. When the score drops below a threshold τ, SPIDE starts verifying in parallel while the draft model keeps drafting. After any rejection, it returns to serial mode, and the table is refreshed after every verification.

Across several draft/target model pairs and generation tasks, SPIDE is faster than serial and parallel baselines while keeping target-model calls close to vanilla SD. This makes it a cheaper way to speed up inference.

## Key points

- **Speedup vs. autoregressive decoding:** 3.25× on average and up to 4.56×.
- **Speedup vs. vanilla SD:** up to 2.12×, or an extra 67.7% on average, while target-model calls rise by only 8.2% on average.
- **Comparison with PEARL:** SPIDE is up to 19.6% faster and removes 83.7% of the additional verification cost that parallelism adds, on average.
- **Evaluation setup:**
  - Benchmarks: HumanEval, GSM8K, MGSM (12 multilingual arithmetic tasks) and MT-bench (8 multi-turn dialogue tasks).
  - Model pairs include Vicuna 68M/13B, Pythia 160M/12B, DeepSeek 1.3B/33B, TinyLlama 1.1B with CodeLlama 34B, and Qwen3 1.7B/32B.
  - Baselines: autoregressive decoding, vanilla SD, SVIP, D&V and PEARL.
  - Metrics: walltime speedup (Speed), target-model calls relative to vanilla SD (Cost) and mean accepted tokens (MAT).
- **Ablations and tuning:**
  - Removing either dynamic drafting or parallel verification lowers the speedup.
  - The serial-only variant still beats vanilla SD, SVIP and D&V.
  - Setting τ between 0.5 and 0.9 gives a good balance between speed and cost.
