## Summary
Multi-turn LLM search agents repeatedly query a retriever and add the returned documents to their working context. Much of that material is noise, and it can pull the model toward wrong facts. The authors call this effect "context interference." They study it on closed-book QA benchmarks covering single-hop tasks (NQ, TriviaQA, PopQA) and multi-hop tasks (HotpotQA, Musique, Bamboogle).

Masking different parts of the agent's history shows that the most recently retrieved documents cause most of the harm. Earlier queries and documents contribute only a little. Based on this, the authors build a distilled dataset that pairs retrieved documents with condensed versions keeping only the information relevant to the query. They use it to train a context refiner that cleans each new retrieval before the agent reasons over it.

They then add the refiner to GRPO-based RL training, a method they call CRRL. This gives higher Exact Match than the baselines, along with fewer retrievals, shorter contexts and faster inference. The work argues for a "refine context, then generate" design for AI agents.

## Key points
- **Source of interference:** it comes mainly from the latest retrieved documents. In a PopQA example, refining a 1,287-token document down to 143 tokens corrects the agent's answer.
- **Training setup:**
  - RL data: 40k examples sampled from NQ and HotpotQA training sets.
  - Evaluation: seven QA sets, both in-domain and out-of-domain.
  - Implementation: GRPO built on Verl.
  - Base models: Qwen2.5-7b and Qwen2.5-3b.
- **Baselines:**
  - Retrieval-free: SFT and GRPO.
  - Retrieval-based: RFT via rejection sampling, Search-GRPO, Search-o1 and IRCoT.
- **Efficiency on Qwen2.5-7b (CRRL vs. Search-GRPO vs. IRCoT):**
  - Average retrievals: 1.6 vs. 2.1 vs. 2.6.
  - Average context length: 0.7k vs. 0.9k vs. 2.3k.
  - Time per question: 16.9s vs. 17.7s vs. 22.4s.
- **Code:** released at github.com/AmourWaltz/CRRL.
- **Limitations:** the refiner is an external add-on module, and other agent tasks such as tool use or planning are not studied.
