## Summary
The paper addresses aspect-based sentiment classification: predicting the polarity toward a given aspect term in a sentence. The authors argue that attention-based and CNN-based models ignore syntax. Attention can link an aspect to sentiment words that are grammatically unrelated to it. CNNs only see contiguous n-grams, so they miss sentiment spread over non-adjacent words.

The proposed model, ASGCN, works in four stages:
- A bidirectional LSTM encodes the sentence.
- Several graph convolution layers run over its dependency parse, built with spaCy. A position-based weighting favours tokens near the aspect.
- A mask keeps only the aspect-token features.
- An attention step uses these features to retrieve relevant context from the LSTM states.

There are two variants. ASGCN-DG treats the parse as an undirected graph, and ASGCN-DT keeps edge directions. On three benchmark collections, the model performs on par with or better than strong baselines. Further analyses show that the graph structure captures syntactic and long-distance cues.

The work matters because it is presented as the first use of GCNs for this task. It shows that dependency structure, encoded through graph convolution, can complement sequence models.

## Key points
- ASGCN is the first GCN-based model for aspect-level sentiment, according to its authors. It has two variants: ASGCN-DG (undirected dependency graph) and ASGCN-DT (directed tree, with a sparser adjacency matrix). Self-loops are added to every node.
- Dependency trees come from spaCy. Code and preprocessed data are released at github.com/GeneZC/ASGCN.
- In the layer-depth study, two GCN layers gave the best results on both metrics. Performance declined as depth grew, and at 12 layers the model became hard to train.
- The authors tested how the number of aspects per sentence affects performance, using training samples from LAP14 and REST14. Sentences with more than 7 aspects were dropped as outliers. Accuracy became unstable beyond 3 aspects, which points to weak modelling of multi-aspect interactions.
- A case study compares attention patterns with MemNet, IAN and ASCNN. ASGCN-DG correctly handles negation-like and non-adjacent cues, as in "should be a bit more friendly". Future work includes using dependency edge labels and domain knowledge.
