## Summary
Most LLMs are pretrained on a fixed dataset over a long run, so it is hard to change the data mix or add new sources partway through. BAAI's Aquila2 is a family of Chinese–English bilingual models at 7B, 34B and an experimental 70B size. They were trained with HeuriMentor (HM), a framework with three parts:
- **Adaptive Training Engine (ATE):** continues training on refreshed data mixtures and tolerates cluster resizing and mixed GPU types.
- **Training State Monitor (TSM):** tracks loss, downstream scores and weight norms to decide when to intervene.
- **Data Management Unit (DMU):** gathers web and PDF data, deduplicates and filters it, and sets the mixing recipe.

The architecture uses a 100,000-entry BPE vocabulary, GQA and RoPE. Across 21 benchmarks, Aquila2-34B achieves the best average among the compared base models, ahead of LLaMA-2-70B despite seeing fewer tokens. It also degrades only slightly under Int4 quantization. Code and weights are open, providing a bilingual baseline and a recipe for data-adaptive pretraining.

## Key points
- Released models are Aquila2-7B, Aquila2-34B and Aquila2-70B-expr. The 70B model was trained on a mixed A100 40G and A800 80G cluster. The tokenizer was trained on equal shares of WudaoCorpus (Chinese) and Pile (English).
- Aquila2-34B training reached about 666 tokens/sec/GPU, using FlashAttention-2, tensor, pipeline (1F1B) and sequence parallelism, and bfloat16 training on 64×8 A100-40GB GPUs.
- Base-model results for Aquila2-34B: mean 68.09, 76.56 on Chinese tasks, 81.18 on BUSTM and 39.02 on HumanEval. Evaluation used lm-evaluation-harness and HELM.
- AquilaChat2-34B scores a combined subjective/objective mean of 76.34, compared with 61.25 for LLaMA2-70B-chat.
- The authors disclose that GSM8K test data leaked into pretraining and advise excluding the GSM8K results. Training loss spikes were traced to noisy data and reduced by cleaning that data.
