## Summary

Prompt-based LLM approaches to knowledge graph construction (KGC) work on small, domain-specific datasets but do not scale well. They must place the whole schema in the prompt, and large schemas overflow the context window or get ignored. They also cannot handle cases where no schema exists in advance.

Zhang and Soh propose EDC, a framework that splits KGC into three steps:
1. An LLM extracts triplets freely, as open information extraction.
2. The LLM writes a natural-language definition for each extracted schema element.
3. Those definitions are embedded and used to map each element to its closest schema counterpart. The LLM confirms whether the substitution is valid.

EDC supports both alignment to a large existing schema (Target Alignment) and building a compact schema of its own (Self Canonicalization). An optional refinement pass, EDC+R, adds a trained Schema Retriever that supplies relevant schema items to the prompt, much like retrieval-augmented generation.

On three KGC benchmarks, EDC outperforms prior methods without fine-tuning the LLM and handles much larger schemas. This makes automatic extraction against schemas such as Wikidata practical.

## Key points

- In the ablation, removing the Schema Retriever lowered performance. It helps the LLM choose finer-grained relations, for example `campus` instead of a generic `location`.
- In Self Canonicalization with GPT-3.5-turbo, human-judged precision was 0.956 / 0.867 / 0.898 for EDC across the three datasets, compared with 0.724 / 0.504 / 0.753 for the clustering baseline CESI. The two annotators agreed at 0.94.
- EDC produced smaller schemas: 200 / 225 / 106 relations, versus 280 / 307 / 114 for CESI and 529 / 667 / 204 for the raw open KG.
- CESI tends to over-generalize. For instance, it merged birth/death place, date, and cause into a single relation, a failure that EDC's LLM verification step avoids.
- Running every component on GPT-3.5-turbo cost about 0.009 USD per example. Code is available at github.com/clear-nus/edc, and WebNLG is among the datasets used (cc-by-nc-sa-4.0).
