## Summary
Fine-tuning large language models on specialist corpora tends to improve in-domain skill while eroding general abilities, a problem known as catastrophic forgetting. The authors argue that curriculum learning based on a single difficulty axis cannot handle this trade-off. They propose a curriculum that orders training data along two independent dimensions. For the knowledge dimension, general and domain instances are embedded together with bge-m3 and grouped with K-means. Clusters are then ranked by cosine distance from the general-data centroid. For the task dimension, Qwen3-8B labels each domain instance with a Bloom's taxonomy level, and these labels are merged into three complexity tiers. Training proceeds from general-like clusters to domain-specific ones. Inside each cluster, it moves from simpler to more demanding tasks. An exponential schedule gradually increases the share of domain data during SFT. On Qwen3-8B, the method beats the strongest baseline by 2.49% on medical benchmarks and 1.2% on financial ones, while keeping general performance intact. This makes it a practical recipe for domain adaptation that does not sacrifice general competence.

## Key points
- The pipeline has three stages: data reconstruction (bge-m3 embeddings, K-means clustering, Bloom's-taxonomy labels from Qwen3-8B), curriculum design, and curriculum training with exponential data mixing. K = 100 clusters was chosen, and performance remained stable for K roughly between 50 and 200.
- An IDF-based analysis showed that a cluster's distance from the general centroid correlates strongly with term rarity. This supports using that distance as a proxy for domain specificity.
- In the financial domain, the method scored 0.4889, which is 1.2% above the runner-up PDPC, with a general-benchmark average of 0.5402. Compared with a fixed 50% Uniform ratio, exponential mixing raised medical results by +2.88% and general results by +1.03%.
- Ablations with Qwen3-8B and LLaMA3.1-8B separated the roles of the two dimensions:
  - Removing the knowledge ordering mainly hurt general benchmarks, for example MMLU on Qwen3-8B fell from 0.7291 to 0.7081.
  - Removing the task ordering mainly hurt domain benchmarks, for example MedMCQA on Qwen3-8B fell from 0.6014 to 0.5656, and MedQA on LLaMA3.1-8B fell from 0.6311 to 0.6025.
  - Reversing the knowledge order also lowered results.
- Limitations include testing only on models up to 8B parameters and only in the medical and financial domains. Gains held when the SFT set was enlarged to 60k instances. Code is available on GitHub (Melo-1017/Balancing-Knowledge-Breadth-and-Task-Depth).
