## Summary
Long context windows make the key-value (KV) cache of large language models very expensive in GPU memory and decoding time. Existing eviction methods often discard tokens that later turn out to matter. The authors build on the pragmatic notion of *intention*, meaning the part of the prompt (usually the question) that states what the user wants. Their analysis shows that intention tokens attend to the context in much the same way that generated tokens later do: both concentrate on the answer-bearing segment. Ordinary context tokens attend quite differently.

Based on this, they propose IntentKV, a training-free eviction policy:
1. It detects intention tokens by comparing attention distributions with Jensen-Shannon Divergence.
2. It sums their attention over fixed-size blocks.
3. It keeps the highest-scoring blocks in a single eviction step. Keeping whole blocks avoids fragmenting the context.

Across several long-context benchmarks and models, IntentKV shrinks the cache from 128K to 2K with little loss in quality. This matters for running long-document QA on limited hardware.

## Key points
- **Efficiency:** compressing the cache from 128K to 2K gives about 6.3x faster decoding and 7.8x better memory efficiency than the full-cache setting. Code is released at github.com/linkezh/IntentKV.
- **Ruler results with Llama3.1-8B:**
  - At a 2048-token cache, IntentKV averages 85.5%, compared with 69.3% for SnapKV and 27.7% for StreamingLLM.
  - At a 512-token cache, it averages 60.9%, compared with 52.5% for SnapKV and 16.4% for StreamingLLM.
- **Motivating analysis:**
  - In a 124K-token InfiniteBench example, the top 4K tokens capture about 96.6% of attention, so attention is sparse.
  - The attended tokens shift across generation steps and are scattered rather than contiguous, which motivates block-level retention.
- **Block-size ablation:** a block size of 1 or other small blocks hurt performance badly. Results stay stable once the block size exceeds 16.
- **Limitations:**
  - The method assumes the intention appears at the end of the prompt.
  - Speed gains are small for short contexts on GQA models.
  - Because eviction is irreversible, the method does not suit multi-turn chat.
