## Summary
Classical benchmarks such as MMLU or HELM do a poor job of showing whether people like the responses of chat assistants. A model fine-tuned on human preferences and its base version often receive similar scores there, even though users choose the former noticeably more often. The authors propose having responses evaluated by a strong language model (the LLM-as-a-judge approach). They systematically examine how well such a "judge" agrees with humans. Two resources were created for this purpose. MT-bench is a manually compiled set of multi-turn questions. Chatbot Arena is a crowdsourcing platform where a user asks the same question to two anonymous models and picks the better response. The weaknesses of LLM judges are examined separately. They tend to favor the response in a particular position, longer texts and their own responses, and they are also weak at complex reasoning. Ways to mitigate some of these problems are proposed. The main result: GPT-4 as a judge agrees with human ratings in more than 80% of cases, that is, roughly as often as humans agree with each other. Therefore, human preferences can be evaluated automatically, cheaply and at scale. The most complete picture of quality comes from combining such tests with classical ones.

## Key points
- **MT-bench**: 80 multi-turn questions in 8 categories: writing, roleplay, extraction, reasoning, math, coding, STEM, humanities/social science. Each category has 10 questions. The second question in each dialogue tests whether the model follows an additional instruction.
- **Chatbot Arena**: in its first month of operation, about 30K votes were collected from anonymous "battles" between models. The user sees the model names only after voting.
- **Data for validating judges**: 3K votes from 58 experts on MT-bench and 3K votes from ordinary users on Arena. GPT-4's agreement with humans exceeds 80%, matching the level of agreement among humans themselves.
- **MT-bench scores on a 10-point scale** (GPT-4 as judge): GPT-4 — 8.99, GPT-3.5 — 7.94, Vicuna-13B — 6.39, LLaMA-13B — 2.61. Vicuna-7B, fine-tuned on only 3K dialogues (4.8M tokens), scored 5.95 on MT-bench, but its MMLU result remained low (37.3). That is, no single benchmark fully determines a model's quality.
- **Open resources**: the MT-bench questions, 3K expert votes and 30K dialogues with human preferences have been published in the lm-sys/FastChat repository (llm_judge). There is also a public Chatbot Arena leaderboard on Hugging Face. The paper appeared at NeurIPS 2023 (Datasets and Benchmarks).
