## Summary
Compact LLMs often have enough domain knowledge for multi-step math and coding problems, but they lack a global strategy, so early mistakes snowball across long reasoning chains. The authors show that such models improve markedly when a stronger teacher supplies an explicit plan. Querying a teacher at inference time, however, is slow and not always possible. PILOT moves this guidance inside the model. A lightweight Hyper-Network reads the query and generates an instance-specific latent anchor vector. This vector is injected, via energy-aligned injection, into a frozen backbone at a chosen pivot layer, so no backbone weights change. Supervision comes from a Construct-and-Verify pipeline. Expert heuristic guidance is written for problems the base model fails. Hints that reveal the answer on their own are filtered out with a blind test. The target vector is the pivot-layer hidden state mean-pooled over the guidance tokens. On Qwen2.5 models, PILOT beats strong baselines on mathematical and coding benchmarks, gaining up to +8.9% on MATH500 with almost no added latency. This offers a cheap, non-invasive way to stabilize reasoning in small models.

## Key points
- **Latency:** On Qwen2.5-7B, total latency rises only about 0.2% (10,230 ms vs. 10,209 ms), compared with roughly +6.2% for Soft CoT.
- **Parameter cost:** PILOT adds 38.6M trainable parameters to Qwen2.5-7B (~0.5%) and 7.1M to Qwen2.5-1.5B (~0.46%).
- **Accuracy (Pass@1):**
  - Qwen2.5-1.5B reaches 52.08 on MATH and 56.34 on HumanEval.
  - Qwen2.5-7B reaches 75.24 on MATH and 77.44 on HumanEval.
- **Ablations:**
  - Math depends mostly on the Hyper-Network; a static variant drops to 47.72 on 1.5B.
  - Code depends heavily on energy alignment.
  - Training on unfiltered data lowers the 1.5B model to 50.85 (Math) and 52.20 (Code).
- **Injection depth:** The best pivot layer differs by domain, so it is tuned manually per domain, which the authors list as a limitation.
  - Math uses layer 26, which works as a late correction.
  - Code uses layer 20, which causes a sharp representation shift followed by recovery.
