## Summary
The paper addresses visual text grounding for text-rich images such as infographics, charts and forms. The goal is to localize the possibly scattered image regions that support the answer to a document question. Existing MLLM approaches either match embeddings, which works poorly when only the question is given, or generate bounding-box coordinates. They also often depend on long OCR inputs. The authors propose Doc-AGround, an OCR-free method that reads grounding directly from the model's own multi-head self-attention. A special \<g> token is placed after the image and question. Because attention is causal, this token summarizes the multimodal context, and its attention over visual patches serves as a patch-level evidence map. The model is fine-tuned with patch-wise labels. The per-head maps are then combined using importance weights: each head is scored by how closely its text-to-image attention matches a global correlation pattern estimated from hidden states, measured with negative KL divergence. On the TRIG document-grounding benchmark, the method reports state-of-the-art in-domain and zero-shot results, beating both OCR-free and OCR-based baselines. Because grounding comes before generation, the same model can still answer the question afterwards.

## Key points
- **\<g> token ablation:** under uniform head weighting, removing the \<g> token lowers the average score from 80.80% to 78.18%.
- **Head weighting ablations:**
  - Uniform weighting costs 2.49%.
  - Weighting based on the least-salient query token costs 4.49%.
  - Dense (all-token) weighting slightly beats sparse top-K weighting overall, but sparse weighting does better on InfographicVQA.
- **Which heads matter:** mid layers (e.g., 12, 13, 17) and late layers (e.g., 31, 33, 34) contribute most. Keeping only the top 30% of heads leaves in-domain results nearly unchanged and drops zero-shot by 0.35%. Keeping only the bottom 30% severely hurts performance.
- **Optional OCR filter:** an OCR-based post-hoc patch filter adds about 1.8%, yet the unfiltered version still outperforms most baselines. The method also works with a weaker backbone, Qwen2-VL-2B.
- **Limitations:** a single \<g> token struggles with overlapping or visually distinct multi-region evidence. The authors propose per-region vectors with Hungarian matching and a box-shape loss as future work.
