## Summary
The paper asks how the Old English Consolation of Philosophy, attributed to King Alfred, renders Boethius' Platonist ideas about intellectual contemplation of God. Earlier work, notably Otten, argued that Alfred avoided Neoplatonic speculation. Zukienė instead examines three Latin meters (III.m.9, III.m.11, IV.m.1) and their Old English versions (Metres 20, 22, 24). She compares them with Carolingian commentaries and with Augustine and Gregory the Great, whom those commentators cite. Her method is philological, with close attention to Alfred's philosophical vocabulary. She traces three themes: turning inward to find the divine, the soul as an inner space where intelligible light is seen, and the mind as the main instrument of ascent. She concludes that Alfred's departures from the Latin are deliberate and fit a Christian Neoplatonist framework. One example is his separation of general cognition (OE mod) from the mind raised toward angelic or divine understanding (OE gescead/gesceadwisnes). This places the ninth-century translation within continental early medieval thought.

## Key points
- The corpus is three Boethian meters, III.m.9, III.m.11 and IV.m.1, which correspond to Old English Boethius Metres 20, 22 and 24.
- The paper studies three motifs: inward turning, inner space, and the mind in contemplation.
- Alfred uses OE mod for human cognition in general and gescead(wisnes) where the mind rises toward divine or angelic intelligence (e.g., Metre 20, 218; Metre 22, 44).
- The paper disputes Otten's view (König Alfreds Boethius, 1964) that Alfred "evaded all neo-Platonic speculation". It builds on Godden ("Anglo-Saxons on the Mind") and two studies by Szarmach.
- The paper was first presented at ESSE-7 in Zaragoza, 2004.

## Interesting ideas
- The translation is judged by how well it carries the source's meaning together with its commentary tradition, not by line-by-line correspondence.
- A shift in word choice (mod vs gescead) signals a shift in conceptual level, so terminology becomes evidence of the underlying framework.
- The author follows one technical term across separate passages to reconstruct a single coherent conceptual picture.
- The study uses a deliberately small sample of passages that share one theme, chosen so the phenomenon appears clearly.
- A prior claim is challenged by showing it conflicts with what is known of the sources that the claim itself names (Augustine, Gregory).

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (back): Translation through the meta-world could be scored on preserving the source meaning graph plus contextual knowledge, rather than on surface alignment with the original sentences.
- **I2** (world): The ontology could record when near-synonyms mark different conceptual tiers, so that word choice updates which concept an entity or state belongs to.
- **I3** (frames): Coreference and frame-building could pool the uses of a key term across a whole text, giving a consistent concept profile instead of interpreting each sentence alone.
- **I4** (learn): Small, theme-focused evaluation sets could test one phenomenon at a time, with off-theme passages as negative controls.
- **I5** (learn): When witness parsers or teacher tiers disagree, checking whether a label contradicts its own stated evidence could filter silver data.
