## Summary
Tamil still has little high-quality linguistically annotated data. Raw corpora and datasets for NLU and NLG tasks are growing, but there are only two UD treebanks for Tamil: TTB and MWTT. Each contains roughly 600 sentences drawn from a single source, and neither has named entity annotation. The authors built Aalamaram, the largest open Tamil treebank to date. It contains almost 10,000 sentences from diverse sources, including news and movie reviews. The corpus is annotated for parts of speech, morphological features, named entities and syntactic dependencies. Particular attention is paid to splitting multiword tokens, above all clitics, which earlier corpora barely handled. The annotation is based on UD, but the authors adapted its guidelines to the agglutinative structure of Tamil. The resource is suitable for training neural parsers. It can be used in downstream tasks that need syntax, and also to improve the morphosyntactic knowledge of LLMs about low-resource languages.

## Key points
- Aalamaram (Tamil for "banyan", an allusion to parse "trees") contains almost 10,000 sentences in CoNLL-U format. For comparison, TTB has 600 news sentences, and MWTT has 534 sentences from Lehmann's grammar.
- The corpus has four annotation layers: POS, morphological features, NER and dependency parsing. Earlier Tamil UD treebanks had no NER annotation.
- News texts from 2021–2022 were taken from the newspaper Theekkathir under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 IN license. Movie reviews were taken from an existing dataset, and their language is less formal.
- The data were filtered at the paragraph level. Paragraphs with sentences that were too short or too long, a high proportion of English words or many numerals were discarded. In total, the filter removed about 30% of the data.
- The authors separately analyzed the challenging phenomena of Tamil that forced them to revise the UD guidelines, in particular clitic segmentation.
