## Summary
The paper asks whether LLM-based support helps professional translators post-edit machine translation more effectively. Earlier work tested error highlights from quality estimation (QE) and found little benefit. Here, the authors compare signals from automatic post-editing (APE). Eight professional English→Dutch translators edited MT output of news and biomedical texts under four conditions: plain PE, QE highlights (H-QE, from xCOMET-XXL), highlights derived from APE edits (H-APE), and APE highlights with correction suggestions (S-APE). Translations and corrections came from xTower-Instruct-13B-v0.1. The work was done in SmartPE, a new open-source interface that logs detailed editing behaviour.

None of the assisted conditions improved productivity or quality over plain PE, although quality stayed high throughout. Translators nonetheless rated APE highlights as more accurate and useful than QE highlights. They also preferred correction suggestions, which made wrong highlights read as optional edits rather than distractions. The study shows that perception and agency matter alongside speed. It also releases a reusable dataset and tool.

## Key points
- **Source texts:** four 200-word excerpts per domain. The biomedical excerpts were taken from the QE4PE corpus, while the news excerpts were drawn from the WMT24 devsets.
- **How H-APE spans were built:** the raw MT was aligned with the APE output using Levenshtein distance, and every differing segment was marked as a minor error. In contrast, xCOMET spans sometimes covered only single characters.
- **Inserted critical errors:** two per text were added manually, 16 in total. xCOMET flagged 11 of them and xTower 10; the missed ones were tagged by hand.
- **Released dataset:** about 14,400 words, multi-parallel, with eight PE versions. All versions were rated with the ESA protocol, and the release includes keystroke logs and user ratings.
- **Highlight results:** QE highlights matched oracle edits more closely, yet APE highlights received better perception scores. Erroneous QE highlights lowered translator confidence, and participants asked for opt-in, flexible assistance.
